Following a $20-million revamp, Music City San Francisco has opened and is offering free time at its rehearsal rooms through Friday, Jan. 19.

The “Star Factory,” a 29,000-square-foot space at 1353 Bush St. in downtown San Francisco, will eventually feature four music venues, a restaurant and bar, music equipment rental and sales. Music City is already home to the San Francisco Music Hall of Fame, which offers audio tours of 80 exhibits and written tributes to Bay Area musical history, and a music-themed hotel and hostel, all operating under one roof.

Its studios have live-streaming capabilities, and the complex will include educational, marketing and networking programs for artists.

The business was established in 2005 as Plug N’ Play and then Music City Rehearsal, the brainchild of Rudy Colombini, a musical entrepreneur and vocalist for the Unauthorized Rolling Stones tribute band.

“It really started small. I thought maybe I could just convert the first floor and have a small club,” Colombini said. But Colombini’s vision expanded rapidly.

“Ambition, when it comes to me, is usually more than I can handle,” he said, adding that he wants Music City San Francisco to be a musical hub; a central place for both making and appreciating music in San Francisco. “This is going to rattle and and electrify the streets of San Francisco, with great talent, because talent from all over the state, the country and even the world is going to come here. Because what we provide is truly exceptional. You can come, you can learn, you can live here, and we’ve got four clubs and 20 studios to play in.”

A number of music-related businesses in downtown San Francisco have closed in recent years, including Lennon Rehearsal Studio and venues like Kimo’s, Hemlock Tavern and Red Devil Lounge—all on Polk Street and close to Music City.

Musicians and bands can sign up at the business’ website for free rehearsal rooms until Jan. 19, using promo code “FREE99.” A grand opening is being planned for a later time.
